A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF STUDENTS’ ENGLISH LISTENING ACHIEVEMENT ASSESSED BY COMPUTER BASED TEST AND PAPER BASED TEST ON THE SECOND SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION PROGRAM OF MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF PURWOREJO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2014/2015

Abstract


The quality of learning can be seen from the assessment results. Good assessment system will encourage educators to define good teaching strategies and motivate students to learn better. The objectives of this research are to find out the students’ English listening skill and To find out whether there is a significant result difference between the students’ English listening achievement assessed by computer based test and paper based test on the second semester students of English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo in the academic year of 2014/2015. This research is quantitative comparative hypothesis and population research. The researcher applied documentation to collect the data. The data was gained from the study program’s document about the result of mid-term test of Listening for Everyday course to examine all of the test result from the population due to get the significant result. The object of the research is all of the population of students on the second semester students of English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo in the academic year of 2014/2015. The total population object is 134 students and divided into two groups namely; computer based test group and paper based test group. Then the researcher analyzed the data, the results of the computation are: The means of students’ English listening achievement assessed by computer based test is 52.38, and it is in the category of fairly sufficient; the means of students’ English listening achievement assessed by paper based test is 47.35, and it is also in the category of fairly sufficient. The result of t-test is 2.031, it is higher than the value on t table (2.031 > 1.978), it has proven that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means that there is a significant result difference between students’ English listening achievement assessed by computer based test and paper based test on the second semester students of English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo in the academic year of 2014/2015.
