THE STUDY ON CROSS CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING FOUND IN THE FILM ENTITLED THE LAST SAMURAI DIRECTED BY EDWARD ZWICK AND ITS APPLICATION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

Abstract

The objectives of this thesis are to analyze cross cultural understanding found in the film entitled The Last Samurai, the causes of cross cultural understanding in the film entitled The Last Samurai and its application in English Language Teaching. This thesis is a qualitative research, which does not use statistical procedure, and there is not any treatment like in experimental procedure. The technique is by making the data found in the film, starting from watching the film, quoting, identifying, classifying, and selecting the data related to the cross cultural understanding, and then searching for references related the subject matter. The researcher uses library approach in conducting this thesis, using many sources including books and internet to support the data. And the main data is The Last Samurai film. The result of this thesis shows that cross cultural understanding found in film The Last Samurai. The impact of cross cultural understanding is generally termed culture shock, it involves; honeymoon period, disorientation, irritability and hostility, adjustment and biculturality. The causes of cross cultural understanding found in film The Last Samurai, and Cross cultural understanding can be applied in English Language teaching, especially in CCU class by using a learning strategy namely: exploration, elaboration, and confirmation.
