THE ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGES IN THE BENDS ALBUM BY RADIOHEAD AND ITS APPLICATION IN TEACHING VOCABULARY

Abstract


This research discusses the types of figurative languages in The Bends album by Radiohead and its application in teaching vocabulary. The aims of this research are to identify the types of figurative languages in The Bends album by Radiohead and to describe the application of figurative languages in The Bends album in teaching vocabulary. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The steps to collect the data of this research is the researcher finding the bends album in music platform then the researcher listening and examines the song lyrics and also the types of figurative languages contained in The bends album. Besides, the researcher determines the theory that is in accordance with the figurative languages contained in The Bends album. In analyzing the data, the researcher identified the sentences that contain of figurative languages, classified the types of figurative languages using the theory used, described the findings, implemented the result of the analysis for teaching vocabulary and made the conclusions based from the data that are already analyzed and collected. The researcher found 10 types of figurative languages in The Bends album by Radiohead. There were simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, metonymy, hyperbole, irony, paradox, dead metaphor, and allusion. Metaphor is the most dominant, with 37 (39.36%) out of a total of 92 figurative language data found. The researcher recommends that the types of figurative language in The bends album can be applied in teaching vocabulary for students of senior high school. The researcher suggests teachers to explore figurative languages to increase students’ understanding in vocabulary
