THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING OBSERVE-HYPOTHESIZE-EXPERIMENT (OHE) AS A TEACHING METHOD TO IMPROVE THE STUDENTS’ MASTERY IN LANGUAGE FUNCTIONS TO THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP N 33 PURWOREJO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2011/ 2012
Abstract
Language is an important tool of communication. The primary function of language is for interaction and communication. For language, the existence of language function is a common thing. This language functions process mostly happens in the oral form that exist in the speech acts such as speech, chatting, lesson, dialogue, course, and so on. Based on the assumption that language functions mostly happens in the oral form and it is meant to fulfil certain functions. To improve the students’ mastery in language functions, the teacher can use many kinds of media or methods. By using Observe-Hypothesize-Experiment (OHE) as a teaching method, it can improve the mastering of the students in language functions and the students can learn language easily.
To do this thesis the writer conducted the experimental research. The aim of this research is to find out whether there is the effectiveness of using Observe- Hypothesize-Experiment (OHE) as a teaching method to improve the students’ mastery in language functions on the eighth grade students of Junior High School. In this research, the writer took 64 students of the eighth-grade of SMP N 33 Purworejo in the academic year 2011/2012 as the sample. The writer used VIII A as an experimental class which is consist of 32 students and VIII D as a control which consist of 32 students. The writer conducted pre test and post test. The writer taught language functions using OHE method as a treatment. Statistically, the writer analyzed the data by using t-test separated variance.
The result of this research shows that there is the effectiveness of using Observe-Hypothesize-Experiment (OHE) method to improve the students’ mastery in language functions on the eighth grade students of SMP N 33 Purworejo. From the result of analyzing data, it shows that the mean score of experimental group is higher than the mean score of control group (70.68 > 64.56).In addition, the result of t-value is 4.796. Based on the 0.05 significant level, the value of t-table is 2.000, the computation shows that t-value is higher than t-table that is 4.796>2.000. It means Ho is rejected whereas Ha is accepted. In addition, this study also reveals that the use of Observe- Hypothesize- Experiment method to improve the students’ mastery in language functions is effective.
