The Effectiveness of Cooperative Learning Method through English Word Wall Media in Increasing Vocabulary Mastery at the First Year Students of SMP MuhammadiyahPurworejo in the Academic Year 2011/2012.
Abstract
The objective of this research is to find out whether teaching vocabulary using Cooperative Learning method through English Word Wall media is effective in increasing students’ vocabulary mastery. By using Cooperative Learning method through English Word Wall media, the students have high motivation to learn English. As the result, they can learn vocabulary easily and interestingly.
This research is an experimental research which conducted for the first year students of SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo. The writer took 74 students as the sample. As the experimental group, the writer used class VIIB, which consist of 38 students. Meanwhile, as the control group, the writer took 36 students of class VIIA. Then, the writer gave pre-test and post-test to both classes. The writer taught vocabulary by using Cooperative Learning through English Word Wall Media to the experimental group and common way to the control group. The writer then statistically analyzed the data by using t-test separated variance.
After analyzing the data, the writer concludes that teaching vocabulary by using Cooperative Learning method through English Word Wall media is effective in increasing students’ vocabulary mastery. As the fact, the result of t-value is 6.38. Based on the 0.05 significant levels, the value of t-table is 2.028. The result of computation shows that t-value is higher that t-table, that is 6.38>2.028. Another fact shows that the method used is effective is shown by the mean of experimental group that is higher than the mean of control group. In the experimental group, the mean is 74.37. In contrary, the mean of control group is 59.75.
Based on the result finding, it reflects that the students’ vocabulary increase. They can recall new vocabulary easily. Moreover, they are not bored in learning English since the method and media used is not boring. By using this method and media, the students are more interest.
