A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN DOING TOEIC TEST BETWEEN SMK N 1 PURWOREJO AND SMA N 4 PURWOREJO OF THE TWELVE GRADES IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2011/2012

Abstract

The aim of the research 1) to describe the ability of SMK N 1 Purworejo of twelve grades students in doing TOEIC Test, 2) to describe the ability of SMA N 4 Purworejo of twelve grades students in doing TOEIC Test, 3) to find out whether there is any significant difference of the Ability of SMK N 1 Purworejo students and SMA N 4 Purworejo students of the twelve grades in doing TOEIC test.

The study is comparative research that aimed to discover whether there are differences of student ability in doing TOEIC test between vocational students with senior high school students. Subject retrieval technique used purposive sampling technique. Hypothesis testing used the analysis of Independent Sample T-Test.

The results of data analysis using the t-test in this study showed difference ability in doing TOEIC test between vocational students with senior high school students. Where the t value is 10.604 (> t table (1.980)) with a significance level (p) of 0.000 (p <0.05), meaning that there is a difference ability in doing TOEIC test between vocational students with senior high school students. It can be seen also from the average value of vocational students’ TOEIC test is 396.17 better than the average value of senior high school students’ TOEIC test that is 276.92. Therefore, the research hypothesis that states there is difference ability in doing TOEIC test between vocational students with senior high school students was accepted. Then, it is advisable for the SMK N 1 students to maintain and even improve their abilities in doing the TOEIC test. As for SMA N 4 students are advised to further increase their ability in doing TOEIC test because the test is useful in the future both in continuing education to a higher level and in the world of work.
