THE INFLUENCE OF THE STUDENTS’ MASTERY OF VERB AS PART OF SPEECH MASTERY TOWARD THEIR TRANSLATION ABILITY FOR THE FIRST-GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA N 4 PURWOREJO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/2013
Abstract
Translation has the relationship with the understanding of parts of speech. The most important part of speech is verb. In this thesis, the researcher tries to know whether there is positive and significant influence of the students’ mastery of verb as part of speech toward their translation ability for the first grade students of SMA N 4 Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013. This research includes the correlation study with the experimental method. The number of sample is 62 from the total population 188. To take the sample, the researcher uses simple random sampling technique. There are two kinds of test as the instruments. Those tests are verb mastery test and translation test. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses the descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. The result of the descriptive analysis shows that the mastery of verb as part of speech and the students’ translation ability are good. The result of the inferential analysis shows that there is a positive and significant influence of the students’ mastery of verb as part of speech toward their translation ability, with the correlation coefficient of 0,616. Thus, it can be concluded that there was a positive and significant influence of the students’ mastery of verb as part of speech toward their translation ability.
