Abstract

The objective of this research is to know the level of students’ reading comprehension ability and to find out whether using Reciprocal Teaching Method is effective or not to improve reading comprehension ability of the second grade students in SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo. The type of this research is experimental quantitative research. The sample is 62 students. The researcher collected the data by giving pre-test and post-test to the students. The researcher then statistically analyzed the data by using t-test polled variance. By using Reciprocal Teaching Method students involved in this particular teaching process tend to learn their own understanding of the material. Students do this by predicting, questioning, clarifying and summarizing important information from the text. The result of the study shows the mean score of pre-test of experimental group is 62.97. The mean score of post-test of experimental group is 72.45. It means that the mean score of post-test is higher than mean score of pre-test. The result of t-value is 2.772. It means that the t-value is higher than t-table(2.772>2.000). It means that using Reciprocal Teaching Method to improve reading comprehension ability of the second grade students in SMP Muhammadiyah Purworejo in the academic year of 2012/2013 is effective.
