THE EFFECT OF AN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY OF YOUTH RED CROSS ON STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY AT SMP N 4 PURWOREJO (THE STATE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL FOUR OF PURWOREJO) IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2012/ 2013

Abstract


The purposes of this research are to explain the effect of an extracurricular activity of Youth Red Cross (PMR) on the students’ speaking ability in the second grade students at the State Junior High School Four of Purworejo (SMP N 4 Purworejo) in the academic year 2012/2013 and to find out which group has better speaking ability the group which joins an extracurricular activity of Youth Red Cross or the group which does not. The type of this research is descriptive quantitative research. The result of the research finds that the mean score of speaking test in PMR group and non-PMR group, they are 71.77 and 65.97. The mean of PMR group has better score than non-PMR group (71.77>65.97). Then the result of correlation is 0.815 or 81.5%, which shows that the extracurricular activity and speaking ability have a very high correlation. So, the hypothesis in this research (Ha) proves that “there is an effect of an extracurricular activity of Youth Red Cross on the students’ speaking ability in the second grade students at the State Junior High School Four of Purworejo in the academic year 2012/2013” is accepted
