NEGATIVE TRANSFER OF NGAPAK DIALECT IN DISCUSSION AND DEBATE CLASS: A CASE STUDY ON THE FOURTH SEMESTER OF MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF PURWOREJO
Abstract
This study is aimed to give description of the negative transfer of ngapak dialect in discussion and debate class. A student who uses an “ngapak” language in their countryside may have trouble in learning English. They might use the wrong pronunciation when they speak English. The researcher uses video as the object of the study. The research has objective to describe the influence of negative transfer of ‘ngapak dialect’ in the students’ utterances of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo, especially in the fourth semester. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method. The data are utterances used by the conversation in The Discussion and Debate Class. The research finds there are 43 utterances ngapak dialect. The influences are of /d/,/ð/,/ǝ/,/aʊ/,/eɪ/,/ɪ/,/aɪ/,/ʌ/,/æ/,/ɔ/,/t/,/b/.These influences happen are in discussion and debate class are: 1. Mispronunciation, 2. Changes in pronunciation, 3. Changes in Diphthongs, 4. Changes in Vocal. The ngapak dialect makes negative transfer to the students in pronouncing /d/ in the ending into /t/ in held, when they pronounce‘t’ very clearly but, the correct is /ð/ in think. Changes in diphthongs /aʊ/ about, vowel /ǝ/ in forgotten , diphthongs /eɪ/ in explain, vowel /ɪ/ in report, diphthongs /aɪ/ in climate, vowel /ʌ/ and vowel /æ/ in comeback , Vowel /ɔ/ in Talk. Pronouncing /t/ in the second of word = student, changes in pronouncing /b/ of English word .made by students in pronouncing into /p/ in absorb. Mispronouncing /t/ in the ending of English word made by students in pronouncing into /k/ in reject, mispronouncing when the students say education, the students say this word incorrectly without ‘dj’, only using sound‘d’. There is any ‘k’ in the word beginning; the correct is knowledge without ‘k’.
