Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of the Roundtable technique in enhancing students' writing skills, specifically focusing on recount texts, at X SMA N 5 Purworejo. A quasi-experimental design was employed involving 36 students. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to assess students' writing skills in recount texts before and after the implementation of the Roundtable technique. The pre-test established a baseline for students' initial abilities, while the post-test measured improvements following the treatment. The Roundtable technique involved group discussions and collaborative writing activities, where students took turns contributing ideas to develop recount texts. The pre-test results indicated a mean score of 76.39 with a standard deviation of 7.888, reflecting varied student performance and a significant range of scores. After applying the Roundtable technique, the post-test mean score increased to 84.72 with a reduced standard deviation of 4.206, showing improved performance and consistency. The percentage of students achieving the highest level of proficiency rose dramatically from 31% to 97%. The t-test analysis revealed a significance level (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which is less than the 0.05 threshold, indicating that the Roundtable technique had a statistically significant positive impact on students' writing skills. The findings demonstrate that the Roundtable technique is an effective instructional method for improving students' writing skills in recount texts.
