The Analysis of Associative Meaning in John Mayer’s Song Lyrics in the Album Sob Rock and its Application in in Teaching Vocabulary

Abstract


This research discusses the types and meanings related to the individual mental understanding of the speaker in John Mayer’s Song Lyrics in The Album Sob Rock And Its Application in Teaching Vocabulary. The aims of this research are to identify the types of associative meaning found in John Mayers’s Sob Rock and to describe the application of associative meaning in John Mayers’s Sob Rock song lyrics in teaching vocabulary. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. This research was analyzed by Leech theory. The steps to collect the data of this research were downloading the lyrics of John Mayer’s album Sob Rock, listening, reading and understanding the song lyrics in John Mayers’s album Sob Rock, searching and analyzing the song lyrics of of john Mayer’s album Sob Rock to find associative meaning in that album. In addition, there were some steps in analyzing the data that are covering collecting the sentence/phrases that contain associative meaning, classifying the types of associative meaning, coding the data of types associative meaning, counting the data, applying the result to teach vocabulary mastery, and drawing conclusion and suggestion. After analyzing the data, The researcher found 5 types of associative meaning found in John Mayers’s Sob Rock. There were Connotative meaning, Stylistic meaning, Affective meaning ,Reflected meaning, Collocative meaning. There are 11 (34%) Connotative meaning, 4 (13%) Stylistic meaning, 8 (25%) Affective meaning, 7 (22%) Reflected meaning, and 2 (6%) Collocative meaning. The researcher recommends that the types of associative meaning found in John Mayers’s SOB ROCK can be applied in teaching vocabulary for students of senior high school.
