The Analysis of Apostrophe and Hyphen Used in E.B White's Novel Charlotte's Web and Its Application in Teaching Writing

Abstract


The aims of this research are to identify the rules of apostrophe found in The Novel Charlotte's Web, to identify the rules of hyphen found in The Novel Charlotte's Web, and to describe the application in teaching writing. This research used qualitative method. The data source of this research is E.B White's Novel Charlotte's Web. The researcher collected the data by downloading the e-book of The Novel Charlotte's Web from the internet, reading the novel, and finding the sentence that contain apostrophe and hyphen in the novel. The researchers identified the data, coded the data, classified the data, counted the data, described the application of the results in teaching writing and gave conclusion and suggestion. The result of the research shows that there are 647 data containing apostrophes. There are 137 sentences belong to Rule 1a (21%) , 3 sentences belong to Rule 2a (1%), 505 sentences belong to Rule 5 (78%). There are 19 data containing hyphens. There are 14 sentences belong to Rule 1 (74%) , 3 sentences belong to Rule 2b (16%) , 2 sentences belong to Rule 7 (10%). The finding of this research can be applied in teaching narrative text for the ninth grade students of junior high school.
